Founded as Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School in 1904 by Mary McLeod Bethune. The school underwent several stages of growth and development until it merged with the Cookman Institute of Jacksonville, Florida in 1923 and became a co-ed high school. A year later in 1924, it became affiliated with the Methodist Church and by 1931, the school became a junior college. By 1941, the Florida Board of Education approved the school in becoming a four-year college and a 4-year baccalaureate program in Liberal Arts and Teacher Educations became official. The name was then changed to Bethune-Cookman College. In 2007, the Board of Trustees approved for another name change to Bethune-Cookman University after the institution established its first graduate program.
