By 1941, the Florida Board of Education approved the school in becoming a four-year college and a 4-year baccalaureate program in Liberal Arts and Teacher Educations became official. The name was then changed to Bethune-Cookman College.

In 2007, the Board of Trustees approved for another name change to Bethune-Cookman University after the institution established its first graduate program.
